Sales consultant guides future Olympians

By day, Charlene Rendina spends her time working as a leading sales consultant at Camberwell Green, one of Lend Lease Primelife’s retirement villages in Camberwell, Victoria. When she’s not at work Charlene is busy doing another important job – helping to mentor up-and-coming Olympians.

Having represented Australia in Athletics at two Olympic Games herself – the 1972 games in Munich and the 1976 games in Montreal – Charlene knows all too well what it takes to become an Olympic athlete.

She hopes her guidance and words of wisdom will help a group of young athletes to go on and achieve the same success.
“Through the mentoring program I’m involved in I hope to help young athletes develop the mental strength they require and also to inspire them to achieve their full potential,” Charlene said.

“It’s great to be able to give something back to the sport I once competed in.”

Charlene is involved with Athletics Australia and Athletics International, as well as being an important part of the inaugural Target 2012 squad – a program designed to help athletes develop the skills they’ll need to compete in the London Olympic Games.
Charlene recently returned from a training camp in New Zealand with the Target 2012 group.

As well as being a two-time Olympian, Charlene competed in two Commonwealth Games - winning a Gold medal in the 800m, Silver in the 4x400m relay and Bronze in the 400m at the Christchurch games in 1974. Her experience means she is well-equipped to guide young track and field stars through the pressures they may face.

“Even though there have been a lot of changes in the way athletes now train and prepare, they are still following the same path as I did – just in different generations,” Charlene said.

“I talk to them about how to combine work or study with being an athlete, how to best prepare for major competitions, and about the sacrifices you have to make to be a professional athlete.”

Now in her 60s Charlene has long retired from professional competition, but she still finds time to hit the pavement, running up to 50 kilometres each week.

“I just can’t put the shoes away, not just yet,” she laughs.

According to Kym Faulkner, Village Manager at Camberwell Green, Charlene is an inspiration to have around the village.

“The young athletes that Charlene mentors are truly fortunate to have such a strong role model assisting them with their development,” Kym said.

“She is a real asset to the athletes of tomorrow and it’s great to have such an inspirational person as part of our community at Camberwell Green.”

A brush with stardom for residents at The Village Williamstown

Keep an eye out for some familiar faces on Channel 7’s Australian drama City Homicide, with an episode of the popular show recently filmed at The Village Williamstown.

More than 40 residents from the village were involved in the three day shoot – with many ending up working as paid extras!

According to Penny Lloyd, Village Manager at The Village Williamstown, it isn’t the first time the village has been used as a set for the drama series.

“We’ve had scenes for City Homicide filmed here in the past. The cast and crew are all great and the residents absolutely love it,” Penny said.

“Filming was done at five different locations around the village. It’s a great place for the show to be made as we have a huge community centre which can house all of the equipment they require and it’s also convenient as the village is just a short
drive from the city.

“One scene required a wheelchair to be thrown down a set of stairs which left a large hole in the wall but everything that is damaged is replaced or repaired and it’s certainly entertaining!

“The residents loved being involved and they’ll certainly be keenly waiting for the episode to run on TV.”

Rochford Place hosts government launch for life friendly homes

July 13, 2010

Lend Lease Primelife’s Rochford Place retirement village is leading the market in retirement housing following the launch of a voluntary code of building design guidelines by the Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, the Hon Bill Shorten.

The Hon Bill Shorten launched a voluntary code of building design guidelines for 'liveable' housing standards for the aged and disabled at Lend Lease’s Rochford Place retirement village on Tuesday, 13 July.

Rochford Place was selected by Mr Shorten to promote liveable housing standards as it is one of a few property developments in Australia to have met the silver classification of Liveable Housing Design features which provide Australians with greater independence.

The Liveable Housing Design guidelines are designed to adapt to the needs of residents as their lifestyles change. To meet the minimum standard under the new guidelines, homes will need to feature easy access to the property, easy ability to move around and the ability for cost-effective adaptation.

Located at the heart of the Delfin Lend Lease community of Ropes Crossing in Sydney’s West, Rochford Place is a retirement village within the Lend Lease Primelife and Retirement by Design portfolio. So far 46 homes have been completed with a further 94 homes expected to be launched to market by 2012.

Paul Walsh, Managing Director of Lend Lease Primelife said, “The exceptional design elements of Lend Lease’s Rochford Place have been clearly recognised by Mr Shorten in his decision to host the announcement at the site. Lend Lease Primelife is leading the market in this area and continues to innovate.”

Lend Lease Primelife currently owns and manages a portfolio of 70 retirement villages and 32 Aged Care facilities across Australia and New Zealand comprising 12,209 retirement living units and 2,313 residential Aged Care beds.
