Enterprise Rose at Lexington Gardens

Lexington Gardens Retirement Village in Springvale hosted a special event on April 1, 2012 to celebrate an important piece of the local area’s history.

Village residents and invited guests came together to commemorate the heritage of the Springvale area at an event to launch the Enterprise Rose – a special rose developed by Treloar Roses in honour of the Enterprise Migrant Hostel and its services.

Lexington Gardens is located on the site of the former Enterprise Migrant Hostel. The hostel provided accommodation and comprehensive settlement services for migrants and refugees from 1970 – 1992. During this time it was home to more than 30,000 migrants and refugees from across the world.

Federal MP Simon Crean has supported the Enterprise Rose project since its inception and was the first to plant a rose at the launch event.

"When the migrants came to the hostel on a bus from the airport, they saw a beautiful rose garden at the hostel," project convener Merle Mitchell said.

"They saw that the roses had been nurtured and kept safe, so they thought they would be too."

According to Lexington Gardens Village Manager Christine Smitten, many of the village’s residents are passionate about celebrating the strong historical ties their retirement community has with the local area.

“Lexington Gardens is located on a site that’s steeped in history so we’re doing all that we can to celebrate and preserve that sense of heritage,” Christine said.

“The Enterprise Rose will celebrate the contributions of refugees and migrants to the local community.”

A special rose garden being planted at Lexington Gardens is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Lexington Gardens Retirement Village is located on Westall Road, Springvale in Victoria.

Hibiscus Chancellor Park Quilters

The Hibiscus Chancellor Park Quilters are busy little bees again as they attempt to out-sew themselves for a second year in a row.

Hibiscus Chancellor Park Village Manager, Penny Paton said, “Last year we had two handovers of quilts to charities – in total our residents stitched and gave away 128 items to Laurel House and The Salvation Army.

“The hours the ladies put into each quilt is remarkable. They have incredible talents and just love to give to those less fortunate. The colourful designs are truly amazing,” she said.

The Quilters hold a fair at the end of each year when all profits go back into purchasing materials to continue their work for charity.

Glenaeon turns 25

On 29 November 2011 Jonathan O’Dea, NSW State Member for Davidson gave a speech in parliament recognising Glenaeon’s 25th Anniversary.

Mr O’Dea offered the following praise:

“The Lend Lease owners, management and staff of the Glenaeon Retirement Village should be proud of their 25th anniversary.  More than that, they should be congratulated on creating an environment in which residents are happy to stay long term, where an employee remains with the company from its very early days and where residents can enjoy modern comfortable facilities” Mr O’Dea said.

Congratulations also to Heather Potts who’s 25 year service at Glenaeon was acknowledged in Mr O’Dea’s speech.
