Meet some of our people

Eighty-two year old Barbara Mellor has travelled across the world – to 58 countries in fact – but she couldn’t think of a better place to call home than Glen Woodley in Myrtle Bank.

“I love it here – it’s so easy to lock up and leave, but it’s also great to be part of a close-knit community when I’m at home,” Barbara said.

Between her passion for travel, keen interest in learning and enthusiasm for volunteering, Barbara has always led an active life – and in recent years she’s been even busier!

It seemed only natural for her to make the move to a lowmaintenance villa at Glen Woodley.

“When I decided to downsize I looked at a range of places. Glen Woodley really appealed to me because the units are homely and I can still have my own garden, plus the people who live and work here are lovely. What’s more, the bus to the city is right outside the door and everything I need is close by,” she said.

“One of the best things about living in a community like Glen Woodley is you can keep to yourself if you wish, but there are also plenty of opportunities to be social.”

Barbara has dedicated many years of service to the local community, volunteering throughout her entire adult life for a wide variety of organisations and charities.

“For the last 14 years I have worked at the Art Gallery’s Information Desk. It gives me an  opportunity to meet new people and learn new things,” she said.

“I love keeping both my mind and body active and I strongly believe in making the most of every day. “I’m a member of the Adelaide Museum, the State Library and the Art Gallery, and I often attend lectures on Tuesday nights at the University. I just love to learn.”

When she’s not volunteering, reading or watching foreign films, Barbara is busy planning her next overseas adventure.

“I really enjoy seeing new places and over the years I’ve done a lot of travelling, taking in many popular tourist destinations but also visiting many out of the way places,” Barbara said.

“I generally travel with my younger sister Colleen, but she isn’t quite as adventurous as me – I often have to convince her to come along, but once she gets there we always have a fantastic time.

“Last year we went to Istanbul and Turkey and I’m planning a trip for next year which will take us through Russia by train.

Ground floor and first floor Serviced Apartments, as well as one 3 bedroom cottage, are currently available at Glen Woodley.
