Murray odyssey now in print
In May last year 69-year-old Bob Russell and his two mates set off on a ‘sculling odyssey’ - rowing a staggering 625km down the River Murray for charity.
Now, the epic sculling trip has been immortalised in print, with the three recently launching the book ‘Men of the Murray: A Sculling Odyssey’.
According to Bob, who is a resident of Lend Lease Primelife’s Elliot Gardens retirement resort in Port Elliot, South Australia, the book is a personal diary of the trio’s inspiring journey.
“The book is a journal of the 12 months of training and the 18 days it took to row from the Customs House on the SA/Victorian border to the Customs House at the mouth of the Murray in Goolwa,” Bob said.
“Rowing down the Murray was something I had always wanted to do but it was certainly very taxing and a huge challenge for all of us, as we averaged 40 kilometres a day at 8.5km per hour. When we completed the trip we felt a great sense of achievement.”
The trio raised $35,000 from their odyssey, with half of the profits going to Breast and Prostate Cancer Research and the other half to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“What started out as an idea for a new challenge quickly turned into a great way to raise money for several causes we all feel passionate about,” Bob said.
“We were overwhelmed by the great support we received along the way as well as the support we received from the residents at Elliot Gardens and from Lend Lease Primelife. In fact, Lend Lease Primelife was one of our main sponsors – donating $5,000.
“For us, the book is a fantastic way to share our experiences with everyone and raise some more money for these fantastic charities at the same time.”
The Men of the Murray: A Sculling Odyssey book is $20 a copy, with proceeds to be donated to Breast and Prostate Cancer Research and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
